Nithin and Nikhil Kamath built Zerodha as a discount broker when full-service firms still charged a fortune per trade. Kite and Console turned brokerage into a product people actually liked using. The firm stayed bootstrapped and profitable while the rest of consumer fintech raised giant rounds.
Why founders study it
- Pricing was the go-to-market. Education (Varsity) was the moat around trust.
- Regulation was the arena, not an obstacle they hoped to skip.
- Profit funded Rainmatter, their way of backing other Indian market-infrastructure companies.
What to steal
If your customer is already being overcharged by incumbents, a fair price plus a calmer product can beat a subsidised growth loop. Zerodha also shows that “fintech in India” does not have to mean burn-to-acquire.
